Summary
This position works with the portfolio managers and plays a key role in the investment research process. This role requires interaction with all departments and levels of management.
Essential Functions
- Supports the investment research process.
- Supports a team comprised of Portfolio Managers and the Director of Research.
- Works closely with the Director of Research in support of research efforts, including but not limited to, preparing investment reports and recommendations, building financial models, and attending various investment meetings, webcasts, and conferences.
- Sources investment ideas and assists others in the research of current and prospective portfolio holdings.
- Explores the implementation of quantitative methods into the firm’s research process and assists with ESG analysis.
- Prepares various investment meeting packets and slide decks for weekly investment committee as well as client meetings.
- Generalist approach with a primary focus on U.S. Equities. Other areas of focus to include International Equities, Fixed Income, Mutual Funds & ETFs, and Other / Alternatives / Private Equity.
- 80%+ time supporting the firm’s investment research process. The remaining 20% may be more project-based in nature (e.g. firm compliance, trading & operations) that contribute to the overall business.
Qualifications & Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
- 0-2 years of investment research experience
- Plans to pursue CFA or MBA
- Demonstrated passion for investing and interest in capital markets and portfolio management
- Ability to think creatively, work independently, and make contrarian investment recommendations
- Excellent analytical, writing, and presentation skills
- Ability to quickly learn research systems and databases (e.g. FactSet, Tamarac)
- Highly proficient in Excel
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Strong desire to work in a tight-knit, team-based environment
- Self-starter with the ability to learn new tools/processes quickly and seeks out information as needed
Other Responsibilities
- Howland Capital will train the right candidate on all our software systems, however experience with any of the following is a plus: Tamarac, eMoney, FactSet
- Assist with special projects as directed
- This role requires the ability to work with multiple system vendors
- Attend conferences, seminars and webinars for continuing education

Salary Range
$59,000 – $84,000
